Silvesterchlausen Urnäsch

On the old New Year's Eve, 13 January, groups of Silvesterchläuse in elaborate costumes walk from farm to farm around Urnäsch, ringing heavy bells and singing wordless yodels called Zäuerli. The custom is one of the best-known winter traditions in Appenzell Ausserrhoden, and neighbouring villages such as Waldstatt, Hundwil, Schönengrund and Schwellbrunn keep it too.
