One of Switzerland's most ancient and awe-inspiring living winter traditions. On New Year's Eve, masked groups called 'Schuppel' dressed as 'Schöne' (beautiful figures in intricate headdresses), 'Wüeschte' (nature figures in fir branches and moss), and 'Schö-Wüeschte' roam the snow-clad Appenzell hills, ringing resonant cowbells and singing haunting wordless polyphonic yodels (Zäuerli) to wish good fortune.
