Lucerne's carnival starts early on Schmutziger Donnerstag with the 'Urknall' bang on Kapellplatz. Masked groups and Guggenmusik brass bands then fill the old town for six days. There are big parades on the Thursday and Monday, and the Monstercorso on Tuesday evening closes the carnival.
